Camping
There's nothing more rewarding than a successful camp trip in the wilderness! Self-Reliance
is a practical skill that is learned while camping. Although Riley's offers no "on
site" camping, we are the outfitter to facilitate a primitive camp trip on the White
or Buffalo Rivers. We can shuttle your gear & group to a campsite on the river,
via jon boat. We also rent jon boats for camp trips on the river.(see Jon Boat Rentals)
If you like to camp but don't have all the equipment, we can rent you our professional
camp equipment. (see
Drop Camps
)
Hiking & Backpacking
Travel the trails of centuries past to access peace & seclusion. A vast network
of old logging roads and game trails will lead you through the Ozark Mountains old
pastures & homesteads, oak groves, cedar glades & creek bottoms. Discover
elevated peaks like Turkey Mountain & Prince Fred Knob. Panoramic views.
Hunting
Use us to access the most remote hunting grounds in the Ozarks. Riley's will make
a great winter-time hunting camp or we can help you gain access to a remote riverside
camp. Deer-Arkansas has longest deer season in the nation! There are monster bucks
in this region that have never seen humans and die of old age. Turkey-Flock after
flock after flock of birds, some of the most premier & challenging turkey hunting
in the world. Spring & Fall gun season! Bear-Strong bear population, zone quota
runs with deer season. Small Game-The woods & fields are littered with fox &
gray squirrel, cottontail rabbits & quail. (see
Drop Camps
)
Orienteering
Practice your map skills with a GPS or compass. Whether you're a backpacker or a
day hiker, Riley's will assist in outfitting your trip with shuttle service or maps
or practical advice to help you plan a safe trip. Ask us about the different hikes
& treks for difficulty & distance. Discover the heart of the Ozarks step-by-step
for a rewarding experience that will last a lifetime.
Caving & Geology
Caves & Karst Geology The trained eye of a geologist would immediately recognize
that this is cave country. Characterized by barren rocky soil, limestone & dolomite
bluffs, underground rivers & sink holes. There are over 4000 known caves in
the Ozarks along with numerous abandoned zinc mines. The most noted cave in the
area is Blanchard Springs Caverns, which offers guided cavern tours & wild cave
trips. There are many caves in the forest and wilderness area for the serious caver
seeking "off the grid" & uncharted adventures. Karst geology develops as surface
water seeps through fissures in dense limestone deposits near the earth's surface.
The water dissolves and weakens the limestone causing cracks & breaks. This
water also gets trapped under the limestone creating underground rivers & caves.
When the ceilings of caves extend too close to the surface, their tops collapse
forming sinkholes.
Trail Riding
Mountain Biking Logging roads & trails in Sylamore forest & Lower Buffalo
Wilderness make challenging & exciting bike rides for all skill levels. Serious
bikers can find all day adventure trails & loops. Shuttle service & maps
are available to aid your workout. Trail Riding Riley's can help you contact local
wranglers for trail rides through private ranches or Nat'l forest. Day rides or
hourly rides available. We can also assist on pack trips deep into the heart of
the Ozarks.
